Heart to Hands
"For Reiko." Enji offered a cutesy gift bag to Shouto.
"Thanks." Shouto murmured, accepting the present that Enji picked out with Fuyumi's help. Shouto's daughter would turn a year in a few days.
From the foyer, Enji spotted Izuku nestling Reiko in his arms and Izuku mouthed 'hello Enji-san' when their eyes met.
Nodding in response, Enji, refused to disturb the child who was probably sleeping; no one needed to tell Enji that he was loud.
He turned on his heels, preparing to leave the family alone but something gave him pause. Enji caught the warm, loving gaze Shouto cast upon Shouto's husband and child.
Had I ever looked at Rei like that when she was holding our children? Enji wondered.
Shouto's voice broke that chain of thought."Do you have tonight off?"
Thinking nothing of the small talk, Enji replied. "Yeah, I am."
"Can you look after Reiko for a few hours? We have to attend a fund raiser and our sitter cancelled just now."
Believing Shouto spoke in jest, Enji searched Shouto's face for signs of humour but found an expectant look instead.
"Sure, I'll look after her," Enji said, trying to wrap his head around the idea that Shouto was content to let Enji babysit Shouto's offspring. This was unthinkable, considering what Enji had done to Shouto.
Nevertheless, Shouto’s eyes were filled with relief."Thanks, I'll let Izuku know."
Taking his shoes off, Enji drifted into the living room where he sat on the couch, dazed. "I can't believe this."
As if confirming this strange reality, Izuku soon emerged in the living room, flashing him a grateful smile."I just put Reiko down, thank you for doing this, Enji-san."
"It's the least I can do." Enji grunted.
On that note, Shouto brought Izuku a coat and the pair bid Enji goodbye, leaving the apartment.
And like clockwork, Reiko wailed.
Without a second thought, Enji bounded to the child's room, hoping the child was okay. Yet a sensation of tender concern slipped into his mind when he approached the crib.
What if I scare her? Enji was mindful of the massive scar covering his face. There was no doubt it might frighten the baby who had never been left alone with Enji before.
Peering into the crib now, Enji found the green and white-haired toddler standing inside, gripping the railings. He gently lifted her into his arms and waited.
Reiko stopped crying and reached out a little hand, tapping his face, his scar. "Pa!"
