Summary: Deku's latest rescue attempt lands him in the city park and face to face with his secret crush.
The Truth Beneath the Blossoms
Flowering branches of Sakura trees stretched high into the sky, shading below the young hero that patrolled along the river side.
Deku glanced at a brown squirrel scurrying up a tree bark and idly he wondered how the creature perceived the pink petals above.
A thunderous noise in the distance jolted him out of those curious thoughts and into cautious awareness. Flicking green eyes around, Deku quickly scanned the area in search of the disturbance.
Up ahead, he found the culprit, an errant tyre hurtling towards the nearby park where civilians were known to view the cherry blossoms this time of year.
"Not on my watch!" Deku channelled the power of All-For-One and shot across the river bank to intercept the wheel that was drawing dangerously close to a bunch of children playing under the Sakura.
Flicking his wrist outwards, Deku ensnared the wheel in dark tendrils and kicked to the ground, landing gently behind said kids who had yet to notice him. 'Phew, that was close!'
What transpired next was almost comical, following the awestruck shouts and cheers of the children who witnessed the feat and the reactions of the kids that Deku saved.
Halting play, the latter whipped around to face their saviour, their little faces registering surprise, astonishment and ultimately gratitude that led to them clinging tight to the pro hero's waist.
"You're safe now." Gazing down at them, Deku patted their heads, finding them times more graceful than he had been in interacting with a pro hero for the first time.
However, all musings were cut short when an adult pair of arms wrapped around his torso and the floral scent of a familiar perfume teased his senses.
"Oh Deku, thank you for saving my students!" Cried Todoroki Fuyumi against Deku's neck, and it took all of the pro hero's willpower to not melt in her embrace.
See, Izuku was in love with Fuyumi. It all started when Shouto first talked about her at Yuuei, painting a picture of a warm, loving person whose presence was a blessing to all those around her.
Meeting Fuyumi had only elevated Izuku's perception of the older woman, who turned out to be beautiful from the inside and out, easy to talk to and impossible not to crush on.
Rubbing a gentle circle on Fuyumi's back, Deku replied in a soothing tone. "There's no need to thank me, I was doing my job."
"I'm so glad you were...it all happened so fast, there was nothing I could do." Admitted Fuyumi, pulling back to face him.
"You could count on me today, Fuyumi-san." Deku stood tall, giving her a warm smile.
Returning the gesture, a luminous smile lit Fuyumi's face. "I surely did, I always do."
And in that moment, Izuku had no desire to be anywhere but here, basking in Fuyumi's radiance, keeping Fuyumi safe and protected.
Nevertheless, the sing-song voice of a pigtailed girl spoiled the mood, saying, "Todoroki-sensei and Deku sitting in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g!"
The song caught on like wild fire amongst the young students, all watching their teacher and the hero in rabid fascination.
Turning to the group, Fuyumi denied the implication in a firm but gentle tone. "Deku is not my boyfriend, he's a very good friend of mine."
Izuku's smile slid off his face, his heart sinking at the public rejection. There could never be anything more than friendship between them, no matter how much he cared for her.
There was a yelp in the distance and Deku took off to investigate, rattling off a hasty goodbye without awaiting a response. "Gotta go, see you later, Fuyumi-san!"
Be that as it may, Deku returned to the park some time afterward, finding Fuyumi standing alone on the bridge erected over the duck pond.
Tempering his feelings, he stepped on to the bridge, boots tapping on the wood as he approached her. "Hi again."
Grey eyes regarded him behind rimmed glasses. "What made you run off like that? Shouto's not working with you today?"
Be it a natural progression, Izuku and Shouto formed a professional hero duo, being best friends who worked exceedingly well together. Moreover, it afforded Izuku the perk of seeing Fuyumi, since he often visited the Todoroki household.
"I rescued an old lady from falling off a ladder on her balcony." Izuku scratched the back of his head, adding. "And Shouto's actually back at the office, getting an adjustment made to his suit."
Fuyumi seemingly relaxed at the explanation, her slender fingers uncurling at her sides. "Oh I see."
Pressing gloved hands flat against the railing, Izuku turned his gaze towards a cluster of blooming Sakura trees and unbidden, an old memory resurfaced in his mind.
"Do you remember when I came out here as a kid at Yuuei to view the cherry blossoms with you and your family?" Asked Izuku.
Beside him, Fuyumi murmured. "I do."
"I was really lonely at the time with my mother being busy and father, out of town."
Fuyumi's eyes widened. "I didn't know, I'm sorry."
"It's okay." Izuku gave her an encouraging nod before continuing. "Coming out here actually eased my loneliness you know."
"Cherry blossoms can heal people, they can heal pain, even the crime rates go down when they're in bloom."
Fuyumi's light brows creased as she stared down at the water, no doubt reflecting about what her family had been experiencing at the time.
Lifting a hand up, Izuku lay it gently on her shoulder and was rewarded with a soft, tender smile.
She opened her mouth to say something but his phone buzzed at the same time, prompting Izuku to fetch it out his pocket and read his latest notification.
"I'm sorry Fuyumi-san, I have to meet Shouto now." Izuku met her eyes, catching sight of some unnamed emotion there.
And before Izuku could begin to question it, Fuyumi leaned in, pressing petal soft lips again his cheek.
The End.
